A frustrating day for County as they could only pick up a draw from a game that they dominated with 11 corner kicks to the visitor's 1. An error from young keeper Ian Ormson which gifted Cambridge United a point and an outstanding display from Cameron Darkwah on his first start for the club, the main talking points.
County started the game brightly with Craig Hobson taking on the point striker role with Danny Hattersley missing the match due to the broken nose he suffered at Telford.
Hobson was soon in the thick of things, his strike form 25 yards sailing wide after he had been brought down by U's skipper Michael Wylde. The big defender picking up a booking for the challenge.
The visitors first effort came as a James Jennings free kick, looking for former County striker Tom Elliott, was cleared by Jordan Fagbola.
A superb cross field pass from James Tunnicliffe found Darkwah on the right wing, his cross being headed away by Wylde under pressure from Hobson.
County earned the first of a procession of corner kicks on 15 minutes, with Whiteheads cross being headed to the edge of box to Jon Nolan. His lay off to Alex Kenyon who fired well wide.
Liam Hughes missed a great chance to put the visitors ahead as he headed wide from an unmarked position in the 6 yard box on 17 minutes.
A good spell of pressure from County, mostly involving he lively Darkwah, saw them take the lead.
Having earned his side two quick corners in succession, and testing keeper Jonathon Hedge with a snap shot, Darkwah was bundled over in the box on 29 minutes.
Racing onto a neat pass from Nolan, Darkwah cut inside Jennings only for the full back to send him crashing to the ground.
Sean Newton blasting the resulting spot kick passed Jennings.
On a rare breakaway, Elliott was thwarted by a brave save from Ormson, the young County stopper diving at the feet of last season's joint top scorer.
Unfortunately Ormson's next action saw him hand the visitors the equalising goal.
Having collected a back pass on 36 minutes he was caught in possession by Luke Berry who tapped the ball into the empty net to level the scores.
Hobson missed a chance to put County back in front just before the break, shooting wide after neat play between Newton and Whitehead.

County again started the half brightly earning a corner kick in the first minute, Darkwah having a shot blocked by Hobson who couldn't get out of the way, and Hobson himself then firing wide.
The big striker missed the best chance to put the Hatters back in front on 55 minutes as a long ball from Tunnicliffe saw him free in the box after Josh Coulson and Hedge had misjudged the flight of the ball, Hobson's effort well over the bar.
Without having offered too much to trouble the Hatters defence, Elliott was replaced by Sam Smith on the hour mark to a good reception from the main stand supporters.
Still County pressed and neat play between Fagbola, Darkwah and Whitehead provided Whitehead with a decent opportunity. Hedge making comfortable save before he was injured on the next attack, diving bravely at Nolan's feet, the keeper able to carry on after a lengthy delay.
Smith headed wide of Ormson's post when well placed, before Cambridge won their first corner of the game on 74 minutes. Ormson making a diving save as a shot came in through a crowded area.
Danny Rowe and Andy Halls replaced Fagbola and Whitehead with Tom Collins replacing the man of the match Darkwah as County looked for a late winner to no avail.
