Darije Kalezic's side lost for the third home game in succession as Luton Town took all three points thanks to a controversial Jake Howells goal in first half injury time. The County manager made two changes from the team that lost to Hereford United with Danny Hattersley returned to the starting line-up at the expense of Adnan Cirak with Paul Marshall starting a game for the first time coming in for Simon Hackney.
The Hatters began well with good early play from Sam Sheridan and Mark Cullen creating opportunities for Danny Hattersley.
County stopper Richard O'Donnell was then called into action, making a good save to deny Andre Gray after he had beaten the offside trap on nine minutes.
Jon Nolan picked up a neat pass from Sheridan in the middle of the park, shooting wide with left foot effort, Sheridan then finding Newton who's knock down was fired wide by Mainwaring.
The visitors were awarded a penalty as Gray took a tumble in the area without any real challenge from a County defender, Stuart Fleetwood wasting the opportunity to give his side the lead as his spot kick was brilliantly saved by O'Donnell down to his left.
Town didn't have to wait too long for another opportunity to take the lead and again it was a controversial decision as Howells slotted home after Gray had clearly handled the ball in the build up.
HT: Stockport County 0 Luton Town 1
The second half saw little in the way of goal mouth action from either side, indeed County failed to find a single shot to trouble Mark Tyler in the Luton goal, O'Donnell only being tested as he dived to save at the feet of Gray on a rare venture forward by Town.
Kalezic replacing Mainwaring, Cullen and Halls with Simon Hackney, Danny Whitehead and Adnan Cirak in an effort to improve matters.
The only real moment of note for the Hatters coming just after the hour mark as they were denied a penalty of their own as Danny Hattersley went down in the box under a challenge from Steve McNulty and Greg Taylor.
The majority of a healthy crowd left Edgeley Park frustrated at the final whistle as County failed to win for the fourth game on the trot and are now looking over their shoulders at the teams below them in the table.
