County began the festive campaign with something to cheer about as two fine Iain Howard goals secured three points for the Hatters.
County started the game positively, with Howard opening the scoring with only one minute on the clock. Rhys Turner worked a tight situation brilliantly to find Howard in space and with just the keeper to beat he showed composure to lift the ball over the Oxford ‘keeper to give County the early lead they craved.
Despite capitalising on this early opening, for the remainder of the match the chances for both sides were few and far between. County had a very credible penalty claim as Turner rounded the keeper and then attempted a square pass to Iain Howard in front of an empty net only for the ball to hit the out stretched arm of an Oxford City defender, but to the incredulity of just about everyone in Edgeley Park the penalty wasn’t given.
Oxford City’s best chance fell to Kayden Jackson at the start of the second half. The pacy Oxford wide man managed to beat the on-rushing Ormson but fired wide of an open goal following pressure from the County defence.
With very little between both teams following the early goal Phil Jevons sought to double County’s lead following neat play by Adriano Moke who cut inside the box past two defenders and picked out Jevons in plenty of space the experienced striker sent his shot just over the Oxford City goal.
The second goal came five minutes from full time following strong pressure from County. The ball was played to man of the match Iain Howard on the left of the box and his powerful strike flew past the keepers outstretched hand to double his goal tally for the day as well as securing three points for County.
