Stockport County went down to a hard working Leamington side, 2-1 at the New Windmill Ground. County failed to capitalise on going ahead but Leamington never gave up and stole the winner with just 3 minutes to go.
The game started off with County on the front foot and fashioning a chance within the first minute when Howard flicked on a good ball to Battersby but some good defending by the Brakes blocked the striker on his first start for the club. Minutes later Barnsley loanee Rhys Oates found the ball on the left of the box and passed to Phil Jevons 18yards out but the veteran striker slightly miskicked and shot over the bar.
The Brakes started to come into the game a bit more but looked susceptible to what seemed to be a training ground move when Ian Ormson booted a long goal kick towards the left where the ever willing Battersby was there to pick it up and run at the defence but unfortunately it just failed to bear fruit.
There was a long break as Lee Chilton went down in agony and had both teams' physios helping with what looked like a serious ankle injury resulting in the player going off on a stretcher.
The Brakes had chances in the first half, the most dangerous came when the impressive Newton made a run down the left on the break and managed to get a shot off on the edge of the box but it went just wide. However, neither team could force the lead.
The second half started as the first ended, with little in the game, however, 10 minutes into the half the match sparked to life with several chances for both teams. A tussle in the Leamington box landed at the feet of Howard whose shot got an unfortunate deflection.
Battersby again showed how lively he can be with two separate chances within a minute, the first was a powerful effort from the edge of the box which was straight at the keeper and the second was a dipping shot from 20yards out which went over the pack of the players in the box but landed straight into the Leamington keeper's arms.
On the 66th minute County took a deserved lead from a diving Iain Howard header in the 6yard box from a magnificent run down the right by Oates who crossed the ball in with pin-point precision to the winger. But the lead didn’t last long as Leamington equalised on the 73rd minute as Danny Newton's shot into a congested County box took a deflection and squeezed in.
Newton grabbed the winner for the Brakes exactly 10minutes after his equaliser when he headed in a free kick which crept past Ormson into the net.
