As the 2013/14 season came to an end County finished on a high as the Hatters came from behind to record a comfortable 3-1 win over Harrogate Town following two goals from Phil Jevons and a Scott Duxbury strike.
An early chance to break the deadlock fell to Kristian Dennis following an Adriano Moke cross which left Dennis with just the keeper to beat, but he misjudged the bounce and failed to get a clean connection on the ball. The loose ball then fell to early substitute Iain Howard who rifled the shot off the woodwork.
Howard continued to make an impact after coming on as a substitute creating enough space for him to strike the ball from outside the penalty box but keeper Craig MacGillivray palmed the ball out of danger. County continued to press for their first goal in six games with another Iain Howard shot from outside the box but again MacGillivray got down low to deny a County goal.
The game opened up as Ian Ormson was called into action as Liam Hardy broke free of the defence and hit his shot towards the bottom left corner forcing the County stopper into a great diving save which sent the ball out for a corner.
Harrogate Town punished County for their missed chances as they grabbed the lead with some fantastic individual play from Dominic Rowe on the 34th minute as a floated ball was played over to the left flank Rowe touched the ball over the head of Duxbury and half volleyed the ball into the top right corner of Ormson’s net.
Jevons came close to equalising for County with a curling effort but keeper MacGillivray produced a spectacular diving save to his top left corner to deny the County captain.
Two quick goals meant County had turned the game round on the stroke of half time. Theever reliable Phil Jevons equalised on the stroke of half time for County as Harrogate failed to clear the County corner and the ball fell to Jevons on the outside of the box. Jevons managed to fire his shot through the bodies in the box and find the bottom right corner. Scott Duxbury grabbed the lead for County just seconds later after he followed up a scruffy back pass to the Harrogate keeper and dispossessed him, then calmly slotted the ball home.
County came out on top on the second half and had many chances to increase their lead. A chance was gifted to Kristian Dennis as Adriano Moke picked the striker out on the edge of the 6 yard box. Dennis managed to fire a shot at goal but MacGillivray palmed the ball over from point blank range. Just minutes later Scott Duxbury came close to grabbing his second of the game with a powerful shot from 20 yards out just drifting over the Harrogate cross bar into the Cheadle End.
County were reduced to ten men as Kyle Jacobs saw an early end to his season on the hour mark following a late challenge on Nelthorpe.
Harrogate had a great chance to equalise midway through the second half as Liam Hardy got onto the end of a lofted cross with just Ormson in his way, Hardy was composed to sidestep Ormson but then shot wide in front of an open goal.
Jevons went on to round off his football career and the win for County as the captain picked up the ball just inside the penalty area, calmly beating his man and scoring his 21st goal of the season to crown his man of the match performance.
