County failed to build on a good start in tonight’s FA trophy fixture after a great Phil Jevons freekick had put them in front. County continued to pile pressure on Barrow but the visitors equalised through ex-County defender Danny O’Donnell from a corner. Within two minutes of the equaliser Barrow took the lead and with the second half not offering too much from either side, Barrow increased their lead on the break. County responded with a goal from Iain Howard but it was a case of too little too late for the Hatters.
County started the game brightly creating many chances, the best coming when Jevons played in a cutting ball to Rhys Turner leaving him through on goal with two County players available and just the keeper to beat. Turner attempted to square the ball across the goal but the Barrow defence managed to get back in time to clear their lines.
It looked as if County had taken the lead on the 9th minute as Kyle Jacobs turned his man on the half way line earning enough space to float in a ball to Jevons’ feet who laid off into the path of Dennis to slot home but unfortunately the goal was ruled offside.
As County continued to push for an opener, Danny Gossett done brilliantly to win the ball in the middle of the park to play a nice one-two with Dickinson and then neat one touch play with Jevons put him through on goal but the keeper was able to smother just before he can pull the trigger.
The deadlock was finally broken on the 15th minute as Kristian Dennis battled to win a freekick 30 yards out. Nicky Platt dummied enticing the keeper on to his right side leaving Jevons to take advantage, striking the ball over the wall and straight into the back of the net having wrong footed the Barrow ‘keeper.
Barrow found an equaliser on the 23rd minute from a corner directed into the front post leaving former County defender Danny O’Donnell the chance to volley the ball into the Hatter’s net. County were then left feeling hard done by as within two minutes of the equaliser they found themselves behind as Marcus Carver was afforded too much space on the edge of the box, and he punished by chipping the ball over Ormson.
On the stroke of half time Barrow nearly increased their lead after a misjudged header from Platt inside the County area enabled Barrow to get a shot off beating Ormson but fortunately the post came to County’s rescue.
It was a slow start to the second half with neither team having much to offer in terms of chances. The first chance of the half came to Dickinson who worked well down the right flank to free himself from the Barrow defence and crossing into the box from the by line but was just unable to find a County shirt.
As County pressed in search of an equaliser on the 54th minute ‘keeper Tony McMillan rushed out for the ball on the edge of the 18 yard box, Dennis beating him to it then managed to play in a high cross but it was just agonisingly too high for Turner to meet.
Barrow made it 3-1 on the 70th minute as Dickinson was dispossessed on the edge of the penalty area, allowing Barrow to counter as they charged down the line to play a cutting ball which sent Rushton through to round Ormson and finish from a tight angle.
Turner came close to grabbing a second goal for County, doing well to break and get past his man and striking the ball towards the corner but the keeper threw an outstretched hand to it and set the ball out for a corner.
The chances came thick and fast as County went in search of a lifeline. First Duxbury floated in a through ball for Dickinson who stretched to fire off a volley towards goal, but the ball went agonisingly wide of the keepers upright.
Finally County managed to get a second goal as Turner showed brilliant footwork to turn the Barrow defence inside out and fire a shot which the ‘keeper was only able to parry straight into the path of Iain Howard who slid the ball home. This second goal turned out to be too little too late as County pushed for an equaliser but were unable to find one.
