County were beaten today at Edgeley Park as two quick fire goals were enough to see Brackley Town come away with the three points. The County fans were introduced to new signing Adam Cowen who made his debut for the club at centre-half.
It was County who started the brighter of the two teams playing good attacking football but were unable to capitalise on their promising play. Adriano Moke was picked out by Nicky Platt a number of times as the winger made life hard for Brackley left back Neil Cartwright and the defender earned a booking for a cynical foul after being left behind by the winger. On 24 minutes, Phil Jevons was unable to direct his header goalwards after a deep cross from Kyle Jacobs. This was followed by Brackley’s first real chance of the game as midfielder Glen Walker shot narrowly wide after finding a pocket of space just outside the County box.
It was Jevons who was unlucky not to open the scoring on 33 minutes as he weaved his way into the penalty box to see his strong left foot shot superbly blocked by a wall of Brackley defenders. Debutant Cowen nearly opened his account a minute before half time following an excellent Nicky Platt free kick was just out of reach for the giant defender to nod home.
The teams went into the break at 0-0 and re-emerged to find weather conditions had deteriorated with a gale blowing against County and Brackley tried to capitalise by floating a series of balls into the box from set plays. County nearly managed to grab a goal on the break when a Phil Jevons cross was headed narrowly wide by Kristian Dennis on 52 minutes. County dealt with the aerial attack well with Cowen and Jordan Fagbola dominant in the air although the defence was undone shortly afterwards from an unfortunate ricochet. A Scott Duxbury clearance was deflected into the path of Owen Story who mad no mistake to score with a tidy finish making it 1-0 to Brackley in the 63rdminute.
Moments later relentless chasing from Nicky Platt nearly led to an equaliser as he regained possession on the edge of the box only to find his cross from the by-line desperately cleared. Liam Dickinson replaced Kristian Dennis as County looked to draw level only to find themselves 2-0 down on 73 minutes as Brackley broke effectively with Steve Diggin applying a clinical finish to consign County to their third straight defeat.
The tempo increased in the dying stages as County desperately tried to chase the game and Rhys Turner came close with a well struck shot hitting the post from 20 yards but it wasn’t to be.
