County earn battling point

County gained a deserved draw at Worcester City this evening and could have come home with the three points as an impressive first half performance just failed to bring them an opening goal.

County shaded the first half and went closest when Jevons’ free kick was curled against the crossbar. Moke had continued to be a threat throughout the half and both Milligan and Platt were finding him with increasing regularity on the right hand side. Time again he jinked both outside and inside and it was his threatening run that earned the free kick.

After an opening ten minutes where County were feeling their way into the game, some useful interchanges from the midfield triangle of Platt, Milligan and Jevons carved out a number of openings. A Moke cut-back following some attractive football was smashed just narrowly beyond the far post from Platt. County were soon on the front foot again and a near post flick from a corner saw Lofthouse nearly sneak an effort in.

A cross-field pass from Lofthouse allowed Moke to run at the defence once more and his shot was deflected over for a corner. More good football saw Jevons square to Battersby and the striker was able to adjust his stride to hit forst time but it was straight at the keeper.

The half time whistle arrived with County on top although they struggled to replicate their form after the break.

County’s best chance of the second half fell to Moke who ran onto a brilliant Platt through ball but his effort beat both the keeper and the far post.

Worcester started to grow into the game and County were grateful to their two centre halves for their numerous interventions with O’Halloran in particular looking very solid. It was left to County to try and break clear as they absorbed pressure from the home side and although the inventive Jevons and Milligan tried to fashion an opening there were to be no further clear cut chances and County were happy to claim a point.
