A Stockport County XI travelled the short distance to Shawe View to take on Trafford FC on Saturday, the squad made up of players that hadn't played a full part in the previous evenings game against Wigan Athletic. It was a similar line up to the game at Skelmersdale with Tom Whitehurst replacing Dane Smith in goal.
A single goal, from a Danny Rowe free kick on 80 minutes, was enough to see off a stiff challenge from Trafford FC with many of the squad gaining a valuable 90 minute workout.
County's best chance of the first half fell to Cameron Darkwah as the striker beat the offside trap only to drag his shot wide of the far post. Soon after Darkwah teed up Euan Holden for a shot that went narrowly wide.
Trafford were testing Carl Piergianni and Jordan Fagbola and had the ball in the Hatters net on 34 minutes only for an offside flag to deny them a half time lead.
Darkwah, looking lively, again shot wide early in the second half after drawing the keeper off his line, and former County player Martin Andrews poked an effort wide just before the hour mark for the home side.
Danny Rowe went close for County, substitute Andy Graham saw a shot saved by keeper Read and a an Alex Meaney effort just cleared the bar as the Hatters looked for a winner.
With 10 minutes remaining, and with County on the attack, the referee stopped play to award a free kick. Rowe stepped up to lash the ball home to win the game for County.
