ENGLAND AT EDGELEY PARK

Name the ground where the full England side played two international games on the same day? No, it's not a trick question, it actually happened & at Edgeley Park!
On the second Tuesday in January 1958, County groundsman Harold Allcock received a telephone call from an England official asking if the Edgeley Park pitch was playable. And if it was, could they use it for a couple of practise games?!
Apparently, the England squad's training games, originally scheduled for Maine Road, had to be cancelled due to a frozen pitch. Hence the phone call. Allcock confirmed the surface at EP was OK, so game on, and some of the biggest names in world football, never mind England, made their way down the A6 to Stockport.
In the first trial game England played out a 2-2 draw with Manchester City. Ironically, three of the four goals were scored by future County players. Derek Kevan (who would play a key role in our championship success of 1967) scored both for England, with Roy Clarke scoring for City.
A look through the England line-up throws up some legendary names: the famous Blackburn Rovers duo of Ronnie Clayton and Brian Douglas, Wolves wonder Billy Wright, future England boss Bobby Robson and the one, and only, Tom Finney.
In fact, it was the Preston plumber who scored the only goal in the second game, when the seniors beat the under-23's 1-0. The 'youngsters' had a few famous names themselves including Don Howe, Maurice Setters and 'Mr Goals' himself, Jimmy Greaves.
After the games England coach Walter Winterbottom gave the County groundstaff a fiver for the extra work they put in, including the preparation of towels and baths three times over!
