Half-Season review

Posted on: Thu 22 Jul 2010
SENIORS
Despite finishing the year with a defeat in the FA Women's Cup, the mood in the camp remains buoyant as the Ladies remain unbeaten in the Northern Women's Combination League since September.

After a slow start in August and September that saw two wins, two defeats and a draw, the team went through October and November undefeated with three wins and two draws in the league not to mention progressing to the FA Women's Cup Third Round with victories over Bradford City and Wakefield.

Unfortunately, the Ladies couldn't make it three in a row against Yorkshire opposition and succumbed to Sheffield Wednesday in round three in a closely fought contest despite the final score being 2-5.

2010 kicks-off on Sunday (24th) with an exciting derby encounter away to Macclesfield Town Ladies in the Cheshire FA Women's Cup, 2pm kick-off at Club AZ, Astra Zeneca, Alderley Edge.

The Reserves have had a fantastic start to the season, winning all but one of their fixtures to sit at the top of the table with promotion to Cheshire & Manchester WFL Division 1 looking like a realistic prospect, scoring 45 goals and conceding only 5 in the process.

As with the first team, the season recommences this Sunday with a cup match; First Division Middleton Athletic provide the opposition in round two of the Challenge Cup, kick off 2pm at Stockport Georgians FC, Flowery Fields, Stockport.

Both Blues and HNR have had disappointing starts to the season; Blues haven't won since the opening day back in September and sit in the relegation zone in 9th place, with HNR four points and two games-in-hand better off, but only one position above Blues in 8th.

Blues face an away trip to Second Division Ashton United in the Challenge Cup on Sunday and HNR have yet another free date; by the time they play Northwich on January 31, it will have been 10 weeks since they last saw any action!

JUNIORS
Both Under-11s teams are holding their own in the South Manchester Girls Football League, as are the Under-12s who sit in third place, only one point behind joint leaders Poynton and Hough End.

The Under-13s are also only a point off the top of their table in the North Manchester Girls FL and are currently undefeated in the league so far this season.

Both Under-15s and Under-16s have had encouraging starts to the season; the Under-16s face local rivals Hillgate Blues in the Challenge Cup Semi Final on Saturday, a competition in which they were runners-up last season, and they are also still in with a good chance of retaining the league title having lost only one match so far.
