Continuing the County in Africa theme, we heard from Hatters fan Adrian Caville recently.

"I was born in Zimbabwe and following my parents separating returned to the UK in 1959," he told Stockportcounty.com. "My father stayed, re-married and remained there until his death in 2002. I've been a County regular since 1977 and even before as a kid since 1965."

During the 1990s, Adrian had been returning to Zimbabwe on holidays, and began corresponding with a young man from Bulawayo. "He has written to the County programme asking for pen pals," says Adrian. "In 1996 the club kindly donated some pens, balls, pennants and I think what was a pair of Chris Beaumont's old boots that I took to the township in Bulawayo. The only clubs that had provided any sort of kit were County and Leyton Orient."

On that trip, the car borrowed from Adrian's father broke down in the middle of nowhere, near the Zambian border. They managed to catch a bus to Kariba, but the nearest airstrip was a good 3 miles down the road. "This is a road you would not want to walk down - full of lion, buffalo and elephant," says Adrian. "No taxi service and as we wondered what we were going to do, the chassis and engine of what was once a bus came round the corner driven by a local guy. I hailed him down and we negotiated a lift in exchange for my jade green adidas County away strip of the day."

"Sadly the guy in Bulawayo perished I think through AIDS ,but I like to think that the green away shirt is still dodging the wildlife in Kariba. Also plenty of Nynex/County pens still in existence in what has now become a rather sad and dangerous part of the world."
