Gary Ablett included Florent N'Galula in his starting eleven at Rivacre Park.
The Belgium Under-21 international was hoping to earn a contract at Edgeley Park after playing last season in Holland with Sparta Rotterdam.
Vauxhall included former County trainee Lee Furling on the right of midfield.
The Blue Square North outfit provided the Hatters with a stern challenge in the first half with chances at a premium at either end.
County's best moment in the opening exchanges came when Danny Pilkington created a chance for himself but wasted the opportunity when he shot over.
Adam Griffin was then not too far away, either, with a shot from the edge of the box.
Declan Edwards almost broke the deadlock on 35 minutes when Gianluca Havern headed Pilkington's corner back across goal. Edwards made good contact at the far post but Brian Moogan cleared off the line.
County continued to press and a couple of minutes later Oli Johnson was unlucky to see his left-foot shot cleared off the line by Lee Davies.
Michael Rose was inches away from giving County the lead seconds before the break but his 25-yard drive skimmed the cross bar and bounced behind.
County (first half); Fon Williams; Halls, Havern, J Thompson, Rose; Pilkington, N'Galula, Turnbull, Griffin, Edwards, Johnson.
A second trialist, David Fitzpatrick, a youngster from Trafford College, started the second half at left-back
County (second half): Rigby; Mullins, S Barnes, Raynes, Fitzpatrick Vincent, Roberts, Tansey, Mainwaring; Poole, Thompson.
The Hatters had a let off after 50 minutes when Sam Barnes hit a short back pass and although the Vauxhall forward got to the ball before Lloyd Rigby he prodded his shot wide.
The let off stung the Hatters into action and Danzelle St Louis Hamilton made two fine saves to deny Peter Thompson.
Greg Tansey and Matty Mainwaring both caused the home defence problems breaking from midfield and both came close to scoring with shots from the edge of the box.
With the game still deadlocked, and just ten minutes remaining, County took the lead with a quite magnificent goal. There seemed little danger when Mainwaring's cross was comfortably cleared by the home defence but, before the ball bounced, Craig Roberts hit a stunning left-foot volley into the top corner from fully 30 yards.
