COUNTY 3 LINFIELD 1

Posted on: Sat 01 Aug 2009
Stockport County travelled to Windsor Park, Belfast for the Glenn Ferguson Testimonial against Linfield.

County: Fon Williams, Mullins, Havern, Raynes, Rose, Poole, Vincent, Turnbull, Tansey, Baker, P Thompson

Linfield: Blayney, Ervin, Gallagher, Douglas, Bailie, Mulgrew, Garrett, Gault, Lowry, McAllister, Ferguson.

Linfield started the match brightly, with man-of-the-day Glenn Ferguson opening the scoring after 14 minutes. Tansey's head couldn't reach McAllister's cross, leaving Ferguson to chest the ball down and volley past Owain Fon Williams from the edge of the area. Ferguson should have already put the home side ahead moments earlier, but Fon Williams easily coped with his tame effort.

After half an hour, Fon Williams was again called into action, making an easy save from Jim Ervin's header.

On 36 minutes, Peter Thompson ran through on goal but, under pressure from a defender, could make little of his off-target shot .

Ferguson had a header cleared off the line just before the break.

Linfield started the second half as brightly as they did in the first, with Allen twice firing at goal in the space of 3 minutes - the second being a header that sailed just over the bar.

But just before the hour mark, Greg Tansey scored his own wonder goal when he fired the ball into the top corner from outside the area.

Seven minutes later, that man Ferguson nearly added another fine effort to the scoresheet when he fired over from 20 yards.

County secured the result with two goals in two minutes; Danny Pilkington first lobbing Addis in goal, followed by Adam Griffin slipping the ball under the advancing 'keeper after racing clear on the left.

With 15 minutes to go, Peter Thompson swapped sides to join his old side Linfield one last time, but hardly saw the ball as an improved County took charge of the last half hour.
