Glossop NE v Stockport County

Posted on: Tue 03 Aug 2010

County starting XI: fon Williams, Lynch, trialist, Turnbull, Swailes, trialist , Vincent, Tansey, Conlon, Donnelly, Rowe,

The opening five minutes saw County passing the ball well, although it was the home team that forced two corners in succession. The Hatters mounted an attack which saw a Paul Turnbull 25 yard effort well tipped over by keeper in 7th minute.

George Donnelly was looking sharp on his return to the County team just two training sessions after rejoining the club an a six month loan deal. Both he and Barry Conlon were working their defenders well, and linking well with a County midfield that were playing some nice controlled football.

The first half was becoming quite open with Donnelly heading wide from a good Mark Lynch cross and Jamie Vincent's goal bound shot charged down in the 6 yard box, whilst Owain fon Williams made a good a good save at the home centre forwards feet and watched another effort go safely wide.

Greg Tansey strode through from midfield and struck a post from 20 yards with the keeper rooted, but within a minute Donnelly raced on to a through ball from his strike partner Conlon and took the ball around a hesitant keeper before smashing it home to open the scoring for County, he almost doubled the lead a couple of minutes later shooting just wide before the half time whistle.

The same eleven started the second half although soon afterwards David Poole and Richie Partridge replaced Danny Rowe and Jamie Vincent.

Turnbull, who was having another good game in midfield, put David Poole in with a great cross field pass, Poole beat his man and played in Conlon who shot over the bar from close range, then Donnelly had a good shot tipped over the bar before being replaced by a trialist striker.

The new striker was soon in the thick of the action having a shot deflected wide before being brought down in the box, Conlon smacking the resulting spot kick into the bottom corner to double the Hatters lead.

Conlon then had a header deflected over the bar before the home keeper pulled off the save of the game denying the big Irishman from point blank range.

fon Williams then pulled a good save of his own before David Poole got on to a great cross from the left to volley home the third goal for County, and as the game drew to a close both keepers had to make decent saves before the referees final whistle brought an entertaining game to a close.
