Richard was a late starter to professional football, he was 19 when he switched from Sunday morning football to Saturday football, then joined Stratford Town of the Midland Combination.
From there he joined Bedworth United, while still doing a dayjob at a roofing firm in Warwickshire. One day he was told he had a call from Peter Shilton, then-boss of Plymouth Argyle. There was the possibility that it was a wind-up, but it turned out to be genuine - Plymouth were on the lookout for a new striker and were impressed by his record of just under a goal a game.
Jumping at the chance to play full-time football, Landon soon found his scoring boots, scoring five in the last couple of months of the 93/94 season. He scored twice for Argyle on their visit to Edgeley Park in 94/95.
In the summer of 1995, he joined Dave Jones' Stockport County side. However, he injured his ankle on the poor surface at the club's training pitch in Gatley and, although he scored on his debut against Brentford, he struggle to gain full fitness. With the likes of Alun Armstrong, Ian Helliwell and Brett Angell leading County's attack, Landon spent time on loan at Macclesfield and then Rotherham United.
In 1997 he joined Macc in their debut League season, spending time on loan at Hednesford before seeing out his career with Altrincham and then Radcliffe.
It was during his time at Radcliffe that events started that would see him return to County.
Gil Prescott, former assistant manager at Macclesfield, knew Landon from his days at the Moss Rose and went to a Radcliffe game, where Richard asked if he knew of any jobs going in football. A while later, after Sammy mcIlroy took over at County and chose Prescott as his chief scout, he was offered the position of kit manager for the Hatters.
That, as they say, was that, and 'Lando' has been Kit Manager at County ever since.
