With former manager Ray Mathias rejecting the role of Assistant Manager, County moved quickly to appoint former Sligo Rovers, Újpest and Ross County manager Willie McStay to the position. The Hamilton born former defender played around 150 league games in Scotland and England between 1981 and 1992 after starting with Celtic. He finished his playing career as Player Manager of Sligo Rovers in the League of Ireland. Most of his coaching career since has been spent with Celtic's Youth and Reserve teams apart from the season in Hungary and a brief spell at Ross County last season.

Following Didi Hamann's departure as first team boss in November 2011, Willie stayed on in the Assistant role under new boss James Gannon.
