Warren Feeney scored a brilliant hat-trick but still ended up on the losing side after a remarkable game at the Galpharm Stadium.
The in-form hitman struck after just two minutes when he raced clear of the home defence to lift the ball over Paul Rachubka.
But the cheers from the travelling army had barely subsided when Andy Booth headed Adnan Ahmed's corner past James Spencer to level the scores despite vociferous protests County defenders that he had climbed all over Joe Dolan before making contact with the ball.
Six minutes after the break the Terriers took the lead when Pawel Abbott sprung the offside trap and calmly lobbed the ball over Spencer.
County's pace on the counter attack was causing Town all sorts of problems and just six minutes later Feeney was away again. He was just about to shoot when Nathan Clarke tripped him. The Irishman tucked away the penalty but why Clark wasn't dismissed remains a mystery - Mr Olivier, the referee, didn't even produce a yellow card!
It was all County now and they came close to taking the lead on 59 minutes but Rachubka saved Adam Le Fondre's header.
Sixty seconds later David Mirfin rescued his side when he blocked Feeney's goalbound effort.
With 65 minutes on the clock the Hatters took the lead for the second time in the game. Kevan Hurst's corner was punched clear by Rachubka to the edge of the box. Jim Goodwin nodded it back to the far post where Feeney lopped a header into that far corner of the net despite the presence of three Town defenders.
The Hatters looked well on course to record a rare victory in Huddersfield but the game was turned upside down with two Town goals in a minutes.
There were just 7 minutes remaining when Rob Edward's long throw was allowed to bounce in the box and Mirfin took full advantage with a spectacular overhead kick.
Then Ahmed produced an even more spectacular effort - a 25-yard volley that flew past Spencer.
The home side didn't deserve their advantage and they rubbed salt in the wound with a 5th goal in stoppage time. They somehow worked the ball in from the right and, after John McAliskey had lifted the ball over Spencer, Dolan ran the ball over his own goalline.
