In an attempt to arrest a run of four games without a win Chris Turner opted for a brand-new partnership up front in addition to a change from the usual 4-4-2 formation.

Tes Bramble,  who started in midweek at Lincoln, was dropped to the bench with Ludovik Dje chosen to partner Michael Malcolm in attack.

And there was also a return for Michael Raynes in a three-man defensive unit alongside Tony Vaughan and Rob Clare as Turner decided to go like-for-like with the Red Dragons who regularly play 3-5-2. Chris Williams was the player sacrificed for the 17-year-old defender.

Dje, though, was to last just seven minutes before collecting a red card following an off-the-ball incident with Paul Linwood. The refeee missed the altercation but acted on the instructions of his assistant.

The Red Dragons then pressed hard for the opening goal and Mark Jones was unlucky with a right-foot effort that curled just wide.

The home side broke the deadlock on 21 minutes. Jones fed Jon Walters who beat Carl Ikeme with a terrific angled-drive from the edge of the box.

Waltercontinued to cause problems and could easily have scored a first-half hat trick but was guilty of wasting three good opportunities in just 11 minutes.

County's best hope of getting back on level terms appeared to be from set plays. Rob Clare headed Mark Robinson's free kick just wide on 27 minutes.

Then, in first-half stoppage time Matt Hamshaw's corner found Ashley Williams who held his head in his hands after his goalbound shot was cleared off the line by Danny Williams.

Half Time: Wrexham 1 County 0

The Red Dragons doubled their advantage 6 minutes after the break when Mark Jones capitalised on Mark Robinson's poor headed clearance to rfile the ball past Ikeme from the edge of the box.

County responded when Matt Hamshaw split the home defence with an angled pass to release Malcom. But, with just rookie keeper Michael Jones to beat he missed the target.

On 55 minutes the Hatters had Keith Briggs to thank for a goalline clearance from the dangerous Jones.

Jones was not to be denied, though. Two minutes later he grabbed his second of the game with a low shot from 20 yards.

Turner made three changes in the 64th minute and it was one of the substitutes, Tes Bramble, who almost grabbed a consolation. Jones spilled Hamshaw's quick free kick to the former Southend man who saw his shot rebound off the inside of the post.

That summed up a disappointing afternoon for the magnificent travelling army of almost  700 who, despite watching their team crash to defeat, out-sung the home fans for the full 90 minutes.
