County had Conrad Logan to thank for securing themselves their first three points of the Christmas period at a wind-swept Racecourse.
Jim Gannon made two changes from the side beaten at Shrewsbury on Boxing Day.
Both full-backs who started at the New Meadow, Keith Briggs and Adam Griffin, were left out in favour of fit-again Jason Taylor and Michael Rose.
County dominated proceedings with a lions share of the possesion in a game that had very few clear cut chances in the opening exchanges. The first real chance went the way of Wrexham when Chris Llewellyn shot from 25 yards, only to see his chance go over the bar.
At the other end Liam Dickinson and then Paul Turnbull were caught offside as the game failed to liven up.
The first booking of the afternoon went to Neil Taylor for a foul on his namesake, Jason. The resulting free-kick was taken by Anthony Pilkington but was well saved by Williams.
On the half hour an Inswinging corner from Michael Rose went short to David Poole. The right winger's shot from 18 yards went just over the bar as County started to turn the screw. Liam Dickinson was adjudged to be offside moments later as County couldn't find a way through.
Second Half
Jim Gannon made two changes at half time. David Poole was replaced by Adam Griffin and Adam Proudlock made way for Anthony Elding.
Wrexham should have taken the lead five minutes after the interval when a cross from the right picked out Roberts but, from point-blank range, he headed too close to Logan who made a fine save.
Elding finally gave County the lead whe he started and finished the move that also involved Griffin.
The goal sent the 1,000 strong Blue & White Army into raptures
Wrexham went close 10 minutes later when Steve Evans' headed effort glanced just wide of the post.
Dickinson was again caught offside as The Hatters tried to double their lead.
County again had Logan to thank for keeping the score at 1-0, though, when he dived to his left to save Ryan Valentin'es penalty harshly awarded for handball against Michael Raynes; the defender said later the ball hit him on the chest.
An inswinging corner from by Michael Rose to the near post opened up a shot for Adam Griffin whose 18 yard drive was cleared by Mike Williams.
Wrexham had Marc Williams to thank as he cleared two dangerous County corner balls, the first coming from Michael Rose and the second from Pilkinton's left-foot shot from the edge of the area.
