Stockport vs Southend
 0 - 2
Date:
03/10/2009
Venue:
Edgeley Park
Attendance:
4,102
Referee:
S Bratt

Gary Ablett named the same eleven for the fourth consecutive game for the visit of Southend United.

The bench was also contained the same seven names selected for Tuesday's draw with Hartlepool United.

Controversy reigned at Edgeley Park when Southend took the lead from a hotly disputed penalty eleven minutes after the break.

The referee waived away appeals when Lee Barnard went down in the box but, after the linesman flagged, immediately pointed to the spot and pulled a red card out of his pocket for Paul Huntington.

Barnard sent Owain Fon Williams the wrong way from 12 yards in front of a baying Cheadle End.

And, to rub salt in the wound, Mr Bratt had the opportunity to even things up when Adam Barrett pulled back Nicholas Bignall with 15 minutes remaining, but he allowed play to continue.

The Shrimpers then made certain of the points deep into stoppage time when Michael Rose carelessly gave the ball away to Barnard. His first shot crashed off the bar but the former Spurs striker followed up to score his 10th goal of the season.

With the wind swirling around EP both teams struggled to put passes together and chances at both ends were at a premium.

George Friend did well to block Bignall's effort on 9 minutes. Two minutes later Greg Tansey found Bignall who flashed a shot across goal.

The Shrimpers hit back and Fon Williams had to make a double save to deny Barnard and Frank Moussa at the expense of a corner. When it came in Johnny Mullins made a fine block to deny Friend.

County threatened again on 33 but Michael Raynes was unable to get enough on his header from Rose's cross to trouble Steve Mildenhall in the away goal.

Then, in the final minute of the first half, the Hatters had two more opportunities. James Vincent's cross dipped just over. Second later Mullins whipped in a dangerous cross from the right, the ball bounced off Friend's shins but Vincent couldn't react quickly enough to get his shot away from no more than eight yards.

The second half followed much the same pattern as the frist with neither side really working the goalkeeper. County's best chance to grab an equaliser came when Rose crossed low behing the Southend defence and Bignall, who worked tirelessly all afternoon, was just inches away from turning the ball home.
