County started in optimistic mood; after less than 40 seconds Johnny Mullins tried a long range effort - however, it went high into the stands, leaving County's captain with a wry smile on his face.
A poor clearance from Huntington saw Millwall in possession, but a downward header by Abdou was blocked by Mat Sadler.
Sadler failed to intercept a cross from Neil Harris; Steve Morison's header from inside the six-yard box went inches over the bar.
Swailes made an awful error when he slipped on 15 minutes leaving Liam Trotter running through on goal; thankfully Owain Fon Williams got down quickly to stop & hold on to his effort.
Millwall appealed for a penalty when Harris went down in the area; however, the Millwall striker had made far too much of the challenge for the referee to consider it.
Harris got on the end of a ball from Schofield and instead of blasting the ball at goal, he tried to position it inside the post; Fon Williams blocked excellently.
Danny Swailes, who had already been having an afternoon to forget, made it worse when, under little pressure, he headed a Chris Hackett free kick from the right wing past Fon Williams and into County's goal.
And Swailes could count himself lucky after barging into David Forde while the Millwall keeper was about to take a goal kick; the referee, though, failed to produce a second yellow card for the big defender.
Jemal Johnson cut inside and fired a curling shot with his left foot on 40 minutes, forcing Forde to dive to his right and turn it round the post.
Harris then hit a superb effort with the outside of his left foot; it beat Fon Williams but hit the bar and went over.
The home side doubled their lead when Morison found himself totally unmarked from a corner, and his well-placed header went in off the underside of the bar.
And they got a third just before the break when Owain Fon Williams came out to try and get the ball; he was never close, however, and Schofield took it past him and slotted it into an empty net.
After the break, County had a nice move when Turnbull passed to Vincent, but Vinny's scuffed shot went wide. He appealed for a corner, but the referee gave a goal kick.
Not long after, Jabo Ibehre tried a header from inside the area, but it went wide right.
Millwall had their fourth with yet another own goal, when Paul Huntington, trying to clear a cross from the right, only succeeded in turning the ball past Fon Williams with his knee.
Jonathan Obika grabbed their fifth with a neat finish. Alan Dunne worked the ball into the box, Obika reacted quickly to shoot past Fon Williams.
Paul Turnbull fired a shot on 70 minutes that was turned wide by Forde; Huntington tried an effort from Johnson's subsequent corner, but it was easily gathered by Forde.
While the sun shone back home in Stockport, heavy rain descended on The New Den as both sides exchanged speculative efforts.
The home fans turned up the volume upon hearing news of the scoreline in Norfolk, where Norwich took a late lead against Leeds. Another goal could have put them into second place, but 5-0 it stayed.
