Gary Ablett made just one change for the Carling Cup tie at Huddersfield with Paul Gerrard coming in for Owain Fon Williams who is away on international duty with Wales.
The County boss elected not to replace Gerrard on the bench, though, naming the same six outfield players on duty at Oldham on Saturday.
Former Hatter Anthony Pilkington started for the Terriers with Stockport-born 'keeper, and County fan, Matt Glennon on the bench.
Pilkington had the game's first chance after five minutes when he headed Gary Robert's cross wide at the far post.
Then, five minutes later, County almost took the lead when Alex Smithies fumbled Michael Rose's corner but a defender cleared off the line.
The Terriers responded when Tom Clarke carelessly shot over from the edge of the box.
Then Johnny Mullins came to the Hatters rescue with a timely clearance from Pilkington's low cross from the right.
Greg Tansey hit a blistering 25-yard free kick on 30 minutes that Smithies did well to tip over.
At the other end Pilkington cut inside and tried to curl the ball into the bottom corner, fortunately his shot deflected wide off Rose.
Mullins created a chance for Peter Thompson on 37 minutes when he crossed from the right, the Irishman's first touch was too heavy though and the |Town defence cleared.
The Terriers took the lead in the final minute of the half. Paul Turnbull gave the ball away high up the pitch leaving County short at the back. A swift counter attack saw the ball worked to Jordan Rhodes who beat Gerrard with a low drive from the edge of the box.
Rhodes had the ball in the net within a minute of the restart but his far-post header was ruled out for offside.
County's reprieve was short lived, though. Seconds later the former Ipswich striker curled a beauty inside Gerrard's left-hand post from the edge of the box.
The goal rocked the Hatters and the Terriers pushed hard for a third. Antony Kay shot over from distance and Gerrard did well to save from Tom Clarke.
They also had a stonewall penalty turned down after Havern clearly handled in the box.
Despite this the travelling Blue & White Army continued to give inspirational support and they were almost rewarded just after the hour when Baker and Johnson combined to set up a chance for Poole who saw his low drive saved by Smithies.
A minute later County should have pulled a goal back when Johnson latched onto a shot back pass, ran into the box and rounded the 'keeper. His left foot shot was heading for the back of the net until Joe Skarz came from nowhere to make an unbelievable headed clearance.
The Terriers booked their passage into the second round on 74 minutes. Tansey gave the ball away in midfield which allowed Theo Robinson to race clear and bury a low drive inside Gerrard's right-hand post.
County did manage to pull a goal back two minutes from time when Danny Pilkington hit a great cross for the right which Adam Griffin controlled well on his chest before beating Smithies with a well-git angled drive.
