Lee Todd

Posted on: Fri 28 Aug 2009

Lee Todd began his career with hometown club Hartlepool United, signing pro forms in 1989.

However, the following summer Danny Bergara brought Lee, and his Hartlepool teammate Tony Barras, to Edgeley Park on free transfers; the double signing was another masterstroke from the legendary Uruguayan.

Lee would go on to become a virtual ever-present at left-back over the next seven years at Edgeley Park, playing his part in two promotions - from the Fourth Division in 1991, then from the Second Division in 1997. He's pictured in the famous League Cup tie against Southampton, in his final season.

Tony, incidentally, was a key figure in County's 1990-91 promotion campaign, making 127 senior appearances before moving to Rotherham United in a £50,000 deal three years later.

Following that '97 promotion manager Dave Jones was headhunted by Southampton, then in the Premiership. One of Jones' first move as the Saints' new boss was to return to Edgeley Park to sign Toddy, and goalkeeper Paul Jones, for a combined fee of £1.4m.

At the Dell Lee's opportunities were limited and he joined Bradford City for £250,000 12 months later.

After a short loan spell at Walsall Lee moved back to the north-west to join Rochdale in August 2000 where, oddly enough, he notched more League goals (three) in his 50 appearances for the Spotland side than he did during his 226 League games with County when he scored just twice. He did, however, scored two famous FA Cup goals in County Blue, at Rotherham in York in 1992 and Rotherham the following season.

In 2003, Todd moved into the non-League scene, playing in Tameside first with Mossley and then with Stalybridge Celtic.
