For a list of County's top ten transfer fees paid, click hereCounty's record signing is Ian Moore who arrived at Edgeley Park ahead of the new 1998-99 season when Gary Megson, who was in the Isle of Man with County for the National Football Festival at the time, paid £800,000 to Nottingham Forest for his services. It wasn't the first time that big money had been paid for the son of Rotherham manager Ronnie. After scoring 13 goals in 66 appearances for Tranmere Rovers, Forest parted with £1million to take him to the City Ground in March 1997.
He found life harder in Nottingham, though, and managed just 18 appearances in the first team scoring one goal.
His switch to Edgeley Park got off to a winning start thanks to the 2-1 opening-day victory at Bradford City and he scored his first goal in County blue three days later in the 2-2 home draw with Hull City in the League Cup.
His first league goal came in September 1998 when he scored in the 1-1 draw at home to Huddersfield and but he only managed to add two more to his tally before the season's end.
Although he was never an out-and-out goalscorer during his time at Edgeley Park he still became a fans' favourite with his energetic displays and fantastic pace which was always exciting to watch.
Andy Kilner took over the manager's job ahead of the 1999-2000 season and, although it took until November for Ian to register his first goal of the campaign, he went on to score 11 goals in his most prolific season for the club.
The highlight came on Boxing Day when the striker had been delayed by a crash on the motorway which forced him to miss the start of our game against Wolves.
However, in typical 'Roy of the Rovers' style he duly came off the bench to score twice as County came from 2-1 down to record a thrilling 3-2 victory in front of over 10,000 fans.
The Hatters faithful had double cause to celebrate Moore's match-winning performance as the three points propelled their favourites into the First Division play-off zone.
In total, Ian scored 23 goals in 104 appearances for County before Burnley took him to Turf Moor for another £1million fee in November 2000.
County's most expensive keeper is Ian Gray who the Hatters paid Rochdale £200,000 for in the summer of 1997 to replace Paul Jones who had followed manager Dave Jones to Southampton.
And Gray, who made just 19 appearances for the Hatters during his time here, lined up for our opening day opponents Huddersfield Town after the Terriers signed him from Rotherham United at the start of last season.
There's also an interesting note regarding Wayne Phillips who completes our top ten.
In February 1998 County agreed to pay Wrexham £200,000 for the Welshman, based on him making 25 appearances for the Hatters.
Our 2-0 win at Crewe on February 20th, 1999 was his 24th and last game. He wasn't selected again for the senior team before returning to the Red Dragons seven months later, saving County £25,000!
