Having been with Liverpool & Man United as a kid, Owain signed for Crewe Alexandra in 2003 after impressing then-Academy manager Steve Holland. After helping Crewe reach the semi final of the FA Youth Cup in 2004, he unfortunately suffered a broken leg that kept him out for most of the 04/05 campaign.
He soon began to be recognised internationally at age group level, representing Wales at U16, U18, U19 and then U21. It was with the Welsh set-up that he got to know Wayne Hennessey, who famously kept nine clean sheets with County, and Wayne recommended the Hatters to Owain.
And so in the summer of 2008, with Fôn Williams yet to make his debut for the Gresty Road outfit and his contract up for renewal, Jim Gannon swooped to sign-up the highly rated young 'keeper. He went straight into the first team and began to repay County's faith in him quickly - quite notably during a 1-0 victory at Hartlepool, when a string of superb saves helped County take 3 points when it could easily have been none.
In February 2009, he received his first call-up to the full Wales squad, as John Toshack's men played a friendly against Poland in Portugal, joining two other former County 'keepers, Wayne Hennessey and Boaz Myhill in the team.
Towards the end of the 08-09 season, a shoulder injury kept Fôn Williams out of the final half a dozen or so matches.
