Matty spent several years working his way through non-league football before eventually joined Stalybridge Celtic.
After a spell with Runcorn, where he played two games in the FA Cup proper, Matty first came to the attention of County manager Jim Gannon whilst with Hyde United. In 2006, at the age of 30, he finally got a move to the Football League when joining Macclesfield Town - initially on loan.
After scoring on his debut for the Silkmen, in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy against Carlisle United, he signed a permanent deal at the end of the 2005-06 season.
Gannon had not lost interest in the hard-working striker, though, and with McNeil out of contact during the summer, persuaded him to move to Edgeley Park.
