Wythenshawe lad Michael is a tall central defender who turned professional in March 2005 after a successful traineeship at Edgeley Park.

His professional debut came three months earlier, in an FA Cup-tie against Swansea City, and his impressive performances throughout the rest of the campaign saw him pick up the club's Young Player of the Year award.

Liverpool and WBA were amongst the clubs monitoring his progress but, unfortunately, a series of niggling injuries have hampered his progress since. However, despite these he still managed more than 130 senior appearances by the end of the 2008/09 season, still aged 21.
 
It was during the 08/09 season that Michael was given the responsibility of the captain's armband on occasion. A relatively injury-free season saw him make 39 appearances, and despite his defensive duties he began to weigh in with goals. Three of those came during September, including a superb lob during the 3-1 win over Oldham.
