Although beginning his career at Reading, where he captained the Royals' reserves, it was on loan at Kidderminster Harriers that Mullins made his senior debut in 2004. And so well did he do at Aggborough that he was brought back on loan the following season and chosen as Player of the Season for his efforts.

After being released by Reading in 2006, it wasn't Kidderminster but Mansfield who he joined next, on a two-year deal. He settled in well, and in the 07/08 season again received a Player of the Year award - no mean feat, considering Michael Boulding's goalscoring feats.

In 2008, with the Stags relegated and Johnny out of contract, he chose to leave Field Mill so he could continue playing League football. In the June of that summer he signed for County, after Jim Gannon gave him the chance to make the right-back position, which had been a problem area for the Hatters all through 07/08, his own.

Quickly becoming almost first name on the teamsheet for County, either at right-back or centre half, his fine efforts were rewarded in December '08 with a number of goals. Two similar efforts came during a 4-2 victory at Yeovil Town, and he also opened the scoring against Leeds United at Edgeley Park, a game which County were very unlucky to lose 3-1.

A metatarsal injury sustained against Hartlepool, which kept him out for a month, was exacerbated on his return in the home game against Yeovil, and saw him miss the rest of the 08-09 season.
