Winger McSweeney began his career with his hometown club, Cork City. It was there he was spotted & snapped up by Leicester City while still a teenager, although he failed to make an appearance and in 2003 joined Conference side Scarborough.
Leon then spent several seasons flittering between Unibond League sides, with various spells at Hucknall Town, Hednesford Town and Ilkeston Town, before returning to Cork City in 2007. It was his second spell with City that caught the eye of Jim Gannon, and Leon joined the Hatters in the 2008 January transfer window, after the Irish season had finished.
He made his debut that month in County's 2-1 victory at Notts County, coming off the bench to replace Anthony Pilkington. He had to wait a few more games for his first goal, though, but it was well worth the wait - he hit a peach of a volley past Dagenham's Tony Roberts for the only goal of the game at Victoria Road in February.
However, he then missed a few matches after having a hernia operation, but returned in time to play a part in County's successful 07/08 playoff campaign. He came off the bench moments before Stephen Gleeson's equaliser at Wycombe, started the return leg at Edgeley Park and again came off the bench in the 3-2 victory over Rochdale at Wembley.
