Having been spotted playing for Preston college Cardinal Newman's Centre of Excellence, Darren was invited to train with County towards the end of the 07/08 season, and impressed so much that he was offered a two-year deal.
In 2007 he scored a hat-trick on his debut for the England Colleges U19s side, against Australia, then going on tour to Italy. He settled in well with County's U21 squad, scoring four goals in his first three games.
