Welcome to County, Calum MacDonald!

We are pleased to confirm the signing of former Tranmere Rovers left-back Calum MacDonald on a short-term contract until January.

The 24-year-old defender has signed as a free agent after leaving Tranmere in the Summer, having made 40 appearances for Mick Mellon’s side in all competitions last season as they narrowly missed out on the play-off places. He has spent the last few weeks on trial with the Club and training with the first-team.

Calum began his professional career at Derby County in the Championship, winning the Club’s U23 Player of the Year award in 2017 before spending time on loan in the National League with Barrow AFC.

He made Derby’s first-team bench on eight occasions during the 2018/19 season before leaving to join Blackpool, then of League One, on a two-year contract in 2019, making his debut for the Club in a 5-1 win against Morecambe in the Papa John’s Trophy.

He went on to make 19 appearances for the Seasiders in all competitions before heading out on loan again, this time to Tranmere. His loan spell at Prenton Park was a big success, playing 48 times as the Club reached the League Two Play-Offs, leading to Rovers making the move permanent last year.

Calum will wear the #28 shirt whilst at the Club and will be available for this afternoon’s League Two fixture away at Bradford City.

Director of Football Simon Wilson said:

“Calum is a player with a good deal of League Two and League One experience that found himself out of contract this summer through circumstances outside his control.

“He approached us about training to recover fitness and after a few weeks, we have agreed on this short-term deal that suits all parties with a view to review in January.”

First-team manager Dave Challinor said:

“Calum has been training with us for a few weeks now and played in a bounce game last week. With our injuries down the left hand side, an opportunity arose for both parties that suited and he’ll be a good addition between now and January, when we will all review with the hope of extending. He has good experience over the last few years in the Football League and we are all looking forward to working with him.”
