Gone are the days when young apprentice footballers have to travel miles by bus to get to college!

Stockport County Football Club is once again showing its commitment to its young YTS players through an innovative new scheme to educate players on site, in its 'state-of-the-art' Study Centre.

The partnership between the Club and the LFE ensures that all the young players with aspirations of becoming the next Stephen Gerrard or Michael Owen do not neglect their studies during their time at the football club.

Every Monday afternoon, and all day Thursday, 1st and 2nd Year YTS players are provided with a compulsory full-day's education.

The courses the boys study range from BTEC National Certificates through to Sports Diplomas and also National Sports Awards.

The aim of the courses is to help prepare the youngsters better for either a career in professional football or, if that doesn't work out, a career in the outside world. Many of the skills learnt during their education program are transferable both onto the football pitch and the workplace.

During their first session the boys were taught about the importance of health and safety in sport, this included covering different acts and legislation.

The boys thoroughly enjoyed the day and believe the scheme is much more convenient than having to travel into Manchester.

The only draw back is being far too close to the MD and all the County staff!
