Danny joined the Hatters in January 2011, signed by then-caretaker manager Peter Ward after he was released by Shrewsbury.
He was scouted by Liverpool while playing for his local amateur side aged 16. He went on to captain the Reds' Under-18 side, and was part of the squad that took part in the 2005 World Club Championship. However, a groin injury kept him from making an appearance in the tournament in Japan.
In 2006 he joined Crewe Alex on loan, making the move permanent a year later. He made more than 100 appearances for the Railwaymen before leaving for Shrewsbury.
O'Donnell signed a longer deal the following summer, and regularly captained the County side during 2011-12. Only injuries restricted him from being ever-present; he suffered a fractured ankle during a challenge against York City in February. He returned to the side in April, in time to score the final home game of the season, a 2-0 win over Tamworth.
