Academy Match Report: County 2 – 1 Wrexham

County’s Academy Scholars ended the season with three points on Saturday, as the young Hatters beat Wrexham 2-1 at Edgeley Park.

Goals either side of the interval from Christian Mulindwa and Lee Williams pulled County ahead, before Wrexham fired back through a late penalty.

Wrexham had the first sight of goal. A whipped strike from 18 yards was held by Billy Blake, who relieved the pressure off County’s back line early on.

Another chance went begging for the visitors. A floated cross from deep found the visiting striker’s head, but he couldn’t direct the ball towards goal.

Che Gardner broke down the left and floated a dangerous cross into Kylan Depiazza, but the defender did just enough to put the County forward off.

County found the breakthrough through Mulindwa. The midfielder was brought down by the goalkeeper after latching onto a loose back pass. He stepped up and converted the resulting penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Blake produced a phenomenal save moments later. A header back across goal was volleyed from six-yards, but the County ‘keeper somehow turned the ball behind with his legs.

Depiazza nearly doubled County’s lead. A header across goal by Callum Scruton found the striker, but his strike at goal was well-saved by the goalkeeper.

HALF-TIME: County 1-0 Wrexham

The visitors looked to bounce back straight from the restart, and forced Blake into action again. A loose back pass forced the ‘keeper to race off his line and deny with his feet.

Lee Williams made an instant impact from the bench. A short corner was whipped into the box, where the forward was found with acres of space. From close range, Williams headed home and doubled County’s lead.

Wrexham were awarded a penalty late in the game after a late sliding challenge inside the box. Blake was sent the wrong way, as the spot kick was whipped into the corner.

The visitors had a chance to level the scores. A floated free kick found a Wrexham head, but Blake gathered the effort with ease.
