There will be a charity bucket collection taking place at Edgeley Park ahead of Saturday’s game against Tranmere Rovers, in aid of Mental Health Carers Group, Stockport.
The money raised during the game will make a real difference in the charity’s campaigning for better treatments for mental health, improving education and training, and research into serious mental illness.
Please, if you are able, give generously this weekend to support this fantastic cause.
See below for a message from the charity:
Our group is so pleased to be welcomed back by Stockport County, to carry out a third bucket collection (originally planned for 2020, postponed and back in the game post pandemic!).
Thank you for helping us to improve the lives of people with severe mental health conditions in Stockport. It is only with people like you that we can end mental health stigma and discrimination – and improve provisions, research and treatments.
Our group is made up of people living in Stockport who support family members or friends living with a serious mental health condition. We challenge attitudes to mental illness, invite speakers who share their knowledge and experience about treatment, mental health policies or cutting edge research. We aim to make a difference locally and nationally, to mental health services.
Back in 2019’s bucket collection, we raised enough money for our group to carry on supporting the carers of adults of working age who have a serious mental health condition for another year. We were able to give our Stockport carers emotional support, information about local services and groups, help with advocacy and the opportunity to listen to and speak with local and national decision makers, researchers, clinicians and service providers. We also raised £1,600 for the Mental Health Research Charity, MQ.
Did you know that in 2019, out of a population of almost 300,000, as well as having 2,825 citizens with dementia, Stockport had 2,740 citizens with a serious mental health condition? This is as well as 35,075 citizens with anxiety and 34,070 with depression! We are the ones who help to care for those 2,740 valuable citizens.
If someone develops a serious life changing physical illness such as cancer or MS, most people would feel sympathetic and offer help and support for their changing circumstances and needs. However, even in 2023, this is not the case with serious mental illness such as schizophrenia, bi-polar or borderline personality disorder.
Our motto is “mental illness is an illness, not a lifestyle choice”. We ask for no more blame for chaotic lifestyle or lack of engagement. With your help, we want to challenge attitudes to mental illness! You can find out more about us on our website: www.mhcarersgroupstockport.co.uk.
Please help us to continue our work – increasing awareness of these distressing illnesses which blight valuable lives and help us to continue our, “One Size Does NOT Fit All In Mental Health”, campaign in Stockport to demand the best individual treatments, services and support plans, built on the latest knowledge so families and young working age people in the borough who are suffering from severe mental illness can live a better life.
We’re delighted to welcome Mental Health Carers Group Stockport, a voluntary-community led group, who will be carrying out today’s Match Day Charity Collection.
This charity collection will help enormously to provide much-needed funds, which will make a real difference for campaigning for better treatments, improving education and training, and research into serious mental illness.
Thank you very much for your support for a very worthy cause!
