Paddy Madden to depart:

The Club can confirm that captain, Paddy Madden will depart Edgeley Park in the Summer. Unfortunately, both parties could not come to a satisfactory agreement.

Paddy leaves with nothing but the best wishes of everyone at Stockport County Football Club after his decisive impact in two title wins since joining us in 2021. The Irishman’s place as a Club legend is already assured, having hit 65 goals in 157 County appearances – making him the tenth highest goalscorer in our history.

As our first captain back in the Football League, his influence and contribution on and off the pitch over the last few years cannot be underestimated, with his 22 goals this season playing a huge part in securing our first EFL title in 57 years.

He will always be remembered in Stockport as perhaps the defining signing of the Mark Stott era, the man whose goals ended an 11-year exile in the wilderness of non-league in 2022, and a player who epitomised what it meant to represent Stockport County Football Club. Leaving everything out there on the pitch week in, week out, he has led by example from day one.

He will always remain a part of the County family and community, and we wish him well in the next chapter of his career. We’re sure we’ll see him back at Edgeley Park again in the near future – this is not a goodbye, it’s a ‘see you soon’.

Director of Football, Simon Wilson said:

“I would like to thank every member of the 2023/24 playing squad for their significant contributions in winning the League Two title.

“It goes further than what you see on the pitch. The group set their target at the start of the season, the obstacles that might prevent them from happening and what was required from each other. This work must be done every day – and you need every player. It’s when they play, train, recover, rehabilitate, travel, and so on. I really notice how they back each other up and are so together. They are such a credit to themselves, their families and the club.

“That said, we all know things in football must always evolve and move forward. When this happens, there are always goodbyes that are hard to make and I cannot state how much respect I have for the players that leave us this summer, particularly those who have served the club over multiple years. You have lived through its most successful time in recent history and will never be forgotten, not by your teammates, the staff you have worked with, or our supporters. On behalf of everyone at Stockport County, thank you.

“Now comes the difficult but exciting job of building the squad for the challenge of League One football. We are active in talks and will keep supporters updated with progress over the course of the summer, ahead of returning for pre-season on July 1st .“
