County Christmas Day Six: County Whack Chester For Six!

As we reach Day Six of our #CountyChristmas Countdown, it’s time to look back on arguably our best performance of 2019, as we demolished play-off chasing Chester to go top of the National League North table!

Having lost a two-goal lead at Hereford in the previous game, the pressure was on County to regain top-spot just three days later, as we visited a Chester side strong at home and still chasing a place in the top seven.

What was to follow was a devastating display of attacking football from the Hatters, who scored six goals away from home for the second time that season to storm to the League Summit in front of a huge travelling contingent of County fans.

Nyal Bell had arguably his best game of the season against his former club, and he gave County the lead early on, heading home Adam Thomas’ goal-bound header from practically on the line.

It was 2-0 after just 20 minutes, Sam Walker finishing off a slick County move, before Bell fired home his second to all but seal the win after just 33 minutes.

Far from sitting back in the second-half, County just kept on going – Darren Stephenson on the end of another flowing move from the Hatters to steer home a fourth, before a County penalty allowed Walker to step up and stroke home a fifth – to put it into context, Chester had conceded just four goals at home since Christmas before this game.

The icing on the cake came just three minutes from time, Jordan Keane drilling home from distance to cap a sensational night for all in County blue, and send them marching to the top of the National League North.
