The Club are delighted to confirm the signing of former Rochdale and Fleetwood midfielder Callum Camps on a free transfer.
The sought-after Stockport-born midfielder has spent the last eight seasons of his career impressing in League One, and has now signed a three-year-deal at his home-town club following two seasons at Fleetwood.
26-year-old Camps came through the academy ranks at Rochdale, making his senior debut for the side at just 17 in April 2013 and being named as the Club’s Young Player of the Year in 2014. He went on to make 240 appearances for the Club in all competitions over an eight-year spell, 199 of them coming in League One, and scored 30 goals in that time.
In the Summer of 2020 Callum left Rochdale to join Joey Barton’s Fleetwood on a free transfer, playing and scoring against County at Carrington in a pre-season friendly that same year. In his first season at Highbury he made 48 appearances in all competitions, scoring 11 goals as the Cod Army finished 15th in League One.
Last season saw Camps make a further 34 appearances for the Club, helping them avoid relegation on the final day of the season before leaving following the expiration of his contract. He now becomes County’s seventh signing of the Summer, as we prepare for our return to the Football League after an 11-year absence.
Director of Football Simon Wilson said:
“Callum’s arrival gives what is quite a young and hungry Stockport County team great pedigree, having played almost all his career at League 1, as well as excellent tactical flexibility.
“We have had excellent references about Callum during his time at Fleetwood and Rochdale, and we were impressed by his drive to come to our club and join what we are doing at Edgeley Park.”
Manager Dave Challinor said:
“To get Callum into the building and someone of his talent, ability and profile is brilliant. There were conversations towards the end of last season and through the off-season, but it looked as if it was destined not to happen.
“We’ve been patient and when the opportunity arose again to get Callum in, it was an absolute no-brainer and he undoubtedly strengthens our squad significantly. This is a really exciting signing that will provide even more creativity, goals, experience and a tactical awareness above the level at where we are competing.”
