County Ladies Update: Cup success for the first-team

Having got their first league win of the season under their belt last weekend, County Ladies’ attention turned to Cup action this weekend. Find out how they got on in the FAWNL League Cup in our latest weekly update.

O’Hara reflects on Cup triumph:

The First Team made the trip to Peterborough United Women to play their re-arranged FAWNL League Cup fixture last Sunday, hoping to build on an excellent result away against Hull City the previous weekend. Steve O’Hara takes up the story:-

“A long away trip in the Cup, to a team we didn’t know a lot about from another division. Coming off the back of a good away win at Hull confidence was high, and that showed when the game got under way.

“We controlled game and never really looked in trouble. That said, I don’t think we looked a danger ourselves at the other end. Yes, we created chances, but I don’t really remember their keeper making save after save.

“We have grown as a team over the course of this season having already played several tough games in the league, the togetherness is plain to see. We kept plugging away and it took until extra time to get the breakthrough we definitely deserved.

“A great run by Player of the Match, Levi Rathburn, into the box from central midfield, but her shot was parried into the path of Maria Figueiredo to smash home from close range.

“From then on we were in complete control, keeping possession and running the clock down. We could, and probably should, have won by a couple of goals but overall I was delighted with the girls hard work from start to finish.

“It’s important we take that form back into the league against table-topping Barnsley this weekend. Yet another tough away trip, but I’ll be very happy to have the same performance and result again!”

The next home game for the First Team is against Middlesbrough on Sunday 9th October, 2pm KO at Stockport Sports Village. County Season Ticket holders get free entry!

Fixtures coming up over the next few weeks for County…

Elsewhere on Sunday County didn’t fair so well. The Reserves were knocked out of their League Cup by Barnsley and the Development and Under 18s Teams also lost.

There was better news in the Junior section, where the 12s, 14s, 15s and 16s all recorded victories.

The U15s, sporting their new kit for the season, celebrated a 5-0 win at the weekend.
