County Ladies Update: Tough day at the office

County Ladies faced one of their toughest afternoons in recent seasons last weekend, suffering defeat away at Fylde on a miserable day in Lancashire.

Manager Steve O’Hara reflects on the game in this week’s update:

“What a truly miserable day it was as we travelled to Lancashire to play AFC Fylde. It was torrential rain, and unfortunately the football didn’t do much to brighten the day.

“Even with the rain the pitch was in good condition, which we felt would suit us and how we like to play.

“It was an even opening to the game, but I felt we just couldn’t get control of proceedings. We had a couple of half-chances, but nothing to really trouble the home side’s goal.

We fell behind from our failure to keep possession; the ball was played out to our left and a thunderous shot beat Lucy all ends up.

Again, the game was back and forth and we had a couple of set pieces, but again without causing too many issues.

“We got to half-time and we adjusted our shape out of possession, which seemed to work in our favour, and we looked a lot more comfortable early in the second half.

“But then, the game got away from us as attempted clearance by Lucy cannoned off the attacker and rolled into the empty net, which really knocked the stuffing out of the whole team.

“From that point on, we were always chasing the game trying to get back into it.

“Again we gave away cheap possession in our own half, and quick play by Fylde left their winger one on one and there was nothing Lucy could do to prevent them making it 3-0.

“We tried with no luck to get on the scoreboard, but it just wasn’t to be our day. Lucy continued to make some good saves and we pushed for a way back into the contest, but ultimately when the whistle went to end the game we were just glad to get out of the rain and head back home.

“Not our greatest day and our worst defeat in two years, but I know we will bounce back and I know the players are eager to get to the next game away at Leafield in the league cup next week.

“Special mention to the fans that travelled and stood in the pouring rain to support us. Absolutely incredible effort and we thank you all.

“We will dust ourselves down and be ready for next week.”
