County paints Edgeley Park pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

After the original game was postponed, this Saturday (9th November, 2019), Stockport County Football Club will be hosting a match with a difference to belatedly mark October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

For the second year running, the Club and its players are supporting the UK’s first comprehensive breast cancer charity, Breast Cancer Now, to raise vital funds for the charity’s world-class research and life-changing care, as well as raising awareness of this devastating disease.

In addition to carrying out bucket collections on site, the Club is encouraging fans to stand and dress in solidarity with everyone affected by breast cancer, by digging out their pink clothes.

Not only will the fans be joined by stewards dressed in pink tabards but also the Hatters themselves, who will be ditching the beloved blue in favour of a pink alternative as they warm up for the match against Dagenham and Redbridge.

Mark Lockyear, Stockport County’s Football Club Secretary said:

“We are really pleased to be raising vital funds for Breast Cancer Now during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is a cause which resonates with so many of our staff, players and fans and we wanted to give something back to the charity that does much locally to support those living with and beyond the disease. We look forward to welcoming our fans dressed in pink to Edgeley Park on Saturday for what promises to be a really special day of fundraising.”

In 2017, in Greater Manchester around 2003 women were given the devastating news that they have breast cancer. In the same period around 403 women from the area sadly died from breast cancer.

In the past three years alone, Breast Cancer Now responded to over 190,000 breast cancer support requests from people in Manchester through their helpline, forum, social media and face to face services.

The charity’s Moving Forward courses, which are delivered in Stockport, Tameside, Bolton and Wigan, as well as widely across the UK, give attendees the chance to share experiences in a supportive environment and get tips from breast cancer experts whilst connecting with others in a similar situation. Topics covered may include: healthy eating, exercise, managing menopausal symptoms, cancer fatigue, and intimacy and relationships.

Claire Pulford, Assistant Director of Events, Community and Students at Breast Cancer Now said:

“We are very grateful to Stockport FC and their loyal fans for supporting Breast Cancer Now once again this year, helping to raise vital funds for our world-class research and life-changing care.

“Despite decades of progress, breast cancer remains the most common cancer in the UK – 11,500 women and 80 men still die from breast cancer each year, with hundreds of thousands more living with the devastating, long-term physical and emotional impacts of the disease.

“There has never been a more urgent need for our work. With the help and support of organisations such as Stockport FC we can continue towards our ambition that, by 2050, everyone who develops breast cancer will live and be supported to live well.”

Earlier this year Breast Cancer Care and Breast Cancer Now united to create the UK’s first comprehensive breast cancer charity, united around the shared ambition that by 2050 everyone who develops breast cancer will live, and receive the support they need to live well.
