This Saturday will be the inaugural ‘Danny Bergara Day’ at Edgeley Park, in conjunction with the Supporter’s Co-op and Help The Hatters, as we commemorate one of the all time County greats.
See below for the full statement from the Co-op:
The match this Saturday against Southend United has been declared the inaugural Danny Bergara Day to commemorate our legendary former manager in conjunction with County Supporters’ Co-operative (“the Co-op”) and Help the Hatters, with the blessing of Stockport County FC.
Danny Bergara joined Stockport County in March 1989, with “The Man from Uruguay” going on to transform the struggling Club and enjoying a string of success, including:
- Leading County to their first promotion for twenty-four years
- Four separate visits to Wembley
- Famous matches that live long in the memory – including a famous FA Cup victory over QPR, who were then playing in the Premier League.
The foundations were laid by the Uruguayan for the team that would go on to win promotion to what is now known as the Championship, under his successor Dave Jones.
Seventeen years on from his departure from the Club, fans can still be heard singing “Danny Bergara’s Blue and White Army” on the terraces, and the flag of Uruguay flies proudly over Edgeley Park. Danny is arguably County’s best loved manager and a true club legend, with the Main Stand being named after him.
We are asking fans to help commemorate the event by sporting any retro shirts scarfs or other kit/merchandise from Danny’s era (1989-1995).
The Co-op and Help the Hatters will be holding a bucket collection before the game and at half time. This is part of an ongoing fans fundraising campaign to raise £50,000 to commission a statue of our legendary former manager that will be displayed at Edgeley Park. While stocks last, every donation will be given a special flag commemorating Danny. We will also be distributing our special commemorative souvenir Danny brochures, which include tributes from Peter Ward and Kevin Francis.
With the help of the official Club historians, we will also be presenting a rare interview of Danny following his triumphant promotion game v Scunthorpe on the last day of the 1990-91 season where County triumphed 5-0. This will be presented on the big screen at Edgeley Park ahead of kick-off.
