Defender Holding moves on

The Club can confirm that academy defender Scott Holding has today joined Watford FC for an undisclosed fee.

Scott, 18, has come through the Academy ranks at the club, captaining Damien Allen’s side this year before signing his first pro-deal with the Club earlier in the season. He made his first-team debut for Stockport County in January 2022, starting in our Buildbase FA Trophy tie against Larkhall Athletic.

We wish Scott all the very best in the next stage of his development, as he moves to a Watford side who will be competing in the Championship next season.

Director of Football Simon Wilson said:

“It’s obviously always the Club’s intention to keep hold of our best young players coming through the academy, but at the same time we have always said to the players that if there is interest from clubs higher up where there is a genuine pathway for them to develop, and fair compensation is paid, then we wouldn’t stand in their way.

I’d like to thank Watford for their conduct throughout the negotiation process; we of course wish Scott all the very best during his time there, and look forward to following the next steps in his football career.”

“As was the case with Jack Hinchy’s move to Brighton last year, it is testament to the hard work being done by Damien Allen and the Academy team that our players are attracting interest from higher above.

Promotion to EFL is significant in this regard as we can now officially be recognised again within the Academy system, affording us many benefits but importantly the ability to protect our young players being poached.
