Just seven minutes in, Rooney won the ball back inside his own half, spotting the Rochdale ‘keeper off his line before executing the most exquisite lob over his head from 60 yards out to give County a deserved early lead.
Just seven minutes later and it was 2-0, as Connor Jennings low shot was turned home from close range by Alex Reid for his fourth goal of the season, to stun our League One hosts.
Rochdale did manage to pull one back on 22 minutes, Matthew Lund heading home Alex Newby’s cross to leave the game on a knife-edge.
Rochdale piled on the pressure in the second-half, with Ben Hinchliffe the hero on several occasions with some top-class saves to keep County in front, and hold on for a huge victory.
