Highlights from County’s stunning comeback away at Wealdstone on Tuesday night are now available, as the Hatters won for the third game running to move into second in the National League.
Despite a fast start which saw John Rooney hit the post early on for Jim Gannon’s side, it was Wealdstone who struck the first blow, with Jorome Slew, cousin of England international Dominic Calvert-Lewin, looping a header past Ben Hinchliffe.
It took just six minutes for County to find a reply, however, as Connor Jennings effort from distance was handled inside the area – earning the team their second penalty in as many games. Rooney was again on spot-kick duties, and duly slammed it into the roof of the net to restore parity.
Despite being dominant for large periods of the game, County somehow found themselves behind again minutes into the second half, a mix-up at the back allowing Ross Lafayette to turn home.
Now up against it against a stubborn Wealdstone defence, County threw everything at the their hosts, and finally found a second equaliser with just 13 minutes to go, Richie Bennett sweeping home first-time from Mark Kitching’s cut-back for his first goal.
Just a minute later and we were in front for the first time, as a well worked free-kick delivery ending with Lois Maynard crashing it home from 12 yards to leave Wealdstone stunned.
There was more to come for County, and it was Rooney who had the final say – rifling home after a clever corner-kick routine, before grabbing his hat-trick with two minutes to spare, collecting on the edge of the area, rolling it onto his left foot and firing into the bottom corner.
