Match Preview: Sutton United (H)

This Saturday, County return to league action as we welcome Sutton United to SK3, who will be visiting Edgeley Park for the first time in their history.

Our opponents:

Sutton currently sit 14th in the National League, lower than any of their National League finishes since their promotion from the National League South in 2016. They are six points and six places behind the Hatters in 8th.

Their top scorer this season is Harry Beautyman, who has twelve to his name, and three in his last three in the National League.

The U’s have had a two week break before Saturday’s match, having not played last week due to their exit in the FA Trophy to Dagenham & Redbridge in December.

Their last fixture was a 1-0 loss at Chesterfield, which saw Craig Eastmond sent off for a post-full time scuffle with Mike Fondop-Talum, who also saw red.

The club have also signed Coby Rowe this week from Haringey Borough, meaning he could make his debut for Matt Gray’s men while new recruits Liam McAlinden, Eddie Clarke and Jordan Archer could all feature in their first game for the Hatters on Saturday.

Since we last met:

After the 0-0 draw at Gander Green Lane, Sutton United went on a tricky spell which saw them lose the following four league games, as well as bowing out of the FA Cup, losing 5-2 to Billericay Town in a replay.

However, after that, the U’s turned things around, winning seven of their next ten league games.

Their recent form is that they have won four of their last five games, netting 14 times in the process before the loss at Chesterfield in early January.

Despite this incredible form and turnaround, Sutton have only kept two clean sheets since the 0-0 draw against County in October.

Match stats:

  • The 0-0 draw in October was the first ever meeting between the two clubs, and so while we await a first goal in this fixture, this will be Sutton’s first visit to Edgeley Park.
  • The U’s have only won one of their last five away games, and only two sides have scored fewer goals on the road than them this season.
  • Should County win, the Hatters could be back in the Play-Off places should other results go in our favour, and could be as high as fifth by the end of the day.
