Match Preview: County v Yeovil Town

After the frustration of Tuesday night’s defeat to Sutton, County will be looking to bounce back and spark an improvement in our home form on Saturday evening, as in-form Yeovil visit Edgeley Park, live on BT Sport.

That defeat on Tuesday night saw County slip from 3rd to 5th in the National League table, with Sutton and Altrincham leapfrogging us in the table – although one small consolation came in that we lost no further ground on leaders Torquay, who were beaten at home by Alty.

Of the four sides above us, only Hartlepool are also in action tomorrow, meaning a win could see us jump back into the top three in the National League, and would see us close the gap at the top to nine points, with a further two games in hand.

For rejuvenated Yeovil, meanwhile, their last league game saw them beat relegation threatened Dover Athletic 3-1 at Huish Park, a result that lifted them to 19th in the league table and five points clear of the relegation zone.

They will be looking for another victory here to put more distance between themselves and the drop zone, as they look to start a climb up the league table.

Captain Liam Hogan will be available for this game, having seen his red card against Sutton overturned on appeal.

Since we last met:

When the two sides met in the FA Cup Second Round back in November, the Glovers were a side in disarray. Despite finishing fourth in the 2019/20 season before losing in the play-offs to Barnet, Darren Sarll’s men came into that game bottom of the league table, and without a win in their nine league.

Despite their lowly league position, the Somerset side pushed County all the way that day, eventually going down 3-2 in extra time,  and their recent form suggests we will be in for another difficult game on Saturday.

After finally ending their winless league run at ten games with victory away at Bromley, Yeovil have since won five of their last seven league games to drag themselves out of the relegation scrap, and reignite faint hopes of a play-off push in the second half of the season.

Most notable amongst their strong run of form was a 2-1 win over leaders Torquay at Huish Park on New Year’s Day, although that result did come just a week after a Boxing Day 6-1 defeat to the Gulls at Plainmoor.

Connor Jennings’ extra-time goal sealed our FA Cup Second Round win against Yeovil back in November – his first goal since returning to the Club in the Summer.

Striker Joe Quigley has found his goalscoring form in recent months too, with the former Dagenham man scoring six goals in his last eight National League games to lead their charge up the table.

Match Stats:

  • The two sides have met just nine times in their history, with County winning four games to Yeovil’s one – although that one defeat came in our last league meeting at Edgeley Park, back in 2010.
  • Despite struggling for consistency at home this season, County haven’t lost successive league games at Edgeley Park since September 2019, against Aldershot Town and Torquay United.
