Matty Warburton “Delighted” To Progress In FA Cup

Goal hero Matty Warburton tells Chris Ridgway he’s “delighted” to be in the next round of the FA Cup, on a personal level and for the club, following Stockport County’s win over local rivals Altrincham FC.

The FA Cup has long provided the opportunity for clubs to dream big and provide players with their chance to pit themselves against higher level position. With County now in the First Round proper, we’ll be in the hat with teams from Leagues One and Two, and Matty singled out one club in particular he’d like to face.

“Potentially getting a league club would be really exciting. I know some people might want an easier games on paper and get the bigger money draws in the second and third rounds potentially…but with clubs from League One and Two, maybe a Portsmouth away would be absolutely class…I’m buzzing”.

County eventually looked comfortable in a 2-0 win over Altrincham, but it would be fair to say The Robins posed a real threat in the first half, but a second goal from Warburton killed any hopes of a revival for the visitors.

Matty says he was trying to take his own advice when he found himself through on goal on Saturday.

“I tell the kids I coach to keep your head when you get in that situation that you’ve got to remain composed, and I try to practice what I preach, but it’s easy just to lash at it… if anything I’ve hit it too close to the covering defender…but it’s always great to score in front of the Cheadle End”.

County will be in the FA Cup First Round draw on Monday evening at 7:30 PM, represented by ball number 58.
