Stockport County is delighted to reveal our final signing of the winter transfer window, as midfielder Owen Moxon joins us from Portsmouth.
The 27-year-old box-to-box midfielder has signed a three-and-a-half year deal at Edgeley Park, joining for an undisclosed fee.
Owen was part of the Portsmouth side who won the League One title last season under John Mousinho, a second consecutive promotion for the midfielder, having also won the League Two Play-Offs with Carlisle United in 2023.
His pro-career began north of the border in the Scottish lower leagues, signed as a youngster by Queen of the South and spending three seasons with the Scottish Championship club.
Having been released in 2017, Owen went on to join Annan Athletic in the fourth tier of Scottish football, making 148 appearances across five seasons with the Galabankies before Carlisle picked up his services in 2022.

Moxon had actually been released by Carlisle as a 16-year-old prior to that move to Queen of the South, but his first season back at Brunton Park was one to remember. The midfielder scored six times and registered an incredible 16 assists in the league for the Cumbrians, with his performances seeing him named in the League Two Team of the Season, as well as picking up Carlisle’s Player of the Year award.
As some County fans may remember, he was also named as Man of the Match at Wembley, as his side beat the Hatters on penalties in the League Two Play-Off Final.
Having made a further 23 appearances for Carlisle in the first half of last season, Moxon then completed a move to Portsmouth last January, signing for an undisclosed fee.
That move took him from the bottom of League One to the top, joining a Pompey side pushing for promotion to the Championship. He made 15 appearances for the south coast side during the run-in as they went on to be crowned champions, contributing with a crucial equaliser against promotion rivals Derby County.

Having played a further 12 times in the Championship this season, less than three years on from featuring in the Scottish League Two, the midfielder now moves to Edgeley Park bidding for a third successive promotion.
Owen becomes our third and final signing of transfer deadline day, and will be available for Saturday’s game against Barnsley in League One.

Director of Football, Simon Wilson said:
“This opportunity came about quickly and we were able to react because of our knowledge of Owen that’s been built up over the last few years. He is an athletic midfielder who will be a good fit to our style of play and group. He has promotions on his CV and has shown that he can play in the Championship. Over the life of his contract with us, we hope to give him a platform to do more of the same.”
First-Team Manager, Dave Challinor said:
“Owen is a player who has been spoken about across the three years I’ve been at the Club, and circumstances have meant that bringing him in has never worked logistically. To be able to add him to our squad on a permanent basis from Portsmouth is great for us, and we feel we are adding an all-round midfielder that can play in the deeper role in an energetic manner, has a great range of passing, his set piece delivery is outstanding and he can chip in with his share of goals.
“To have Owen, not just in the short term but beyond that, is really exciting and we feel he can grow with us. His motivation, as ours is, is to get back to the Championship as soon as possible.”
